Incorporating Green Practices into Daily Activities – A Preschool’s Experience

By Noletta Smyth, Early Years – the organisation for young children

Ardstraw Community Playgroup in County Tyrone is making remarkable efforts to instil environmental awareness in their preschool children. By incorporating green practices into their daily activities, the playgroup is helping to shape a generation that values and protects the environment.

Through engaging with the Erasmus+ GREENCODE project Ardstraw Playgroup was prepared to take up the challenge to consider how they could use educational robotics alongside cultivating eco-friendly habits with their preschoolers. Computational thinking involves problem-solving, pattern recognition, sequencing and algorithmic thinking. Educational robotics offers a hands-on approach to learning these skills. Their journey is just beginning by introducing the basic concepts of unplugged programming, such as sequences and conditions while composting for example.

One of the standout initiatives at Ardstraw is composting. Children are encouraged to collect organic waste from their snacks and meals, which is then added to the compost bin. This practical activity not only reduces waste but also teaches children about the decomposition process and the importance of recycling organic materials.

Feeding the birds is another loved activity at the playgroup. The children regularly fill the bird feeders, learning about local bird species and their role in the ecosystem. This activity fosters a sense of responsibility and empathy towards wildlife, encouraging children to appreciate and care for their natural surroundings.

Energy conservation is also emphasised at Ardstraw. Children are encouraged to turn off lights and water taps when not in use. These simple yet impactful habits help reduce the playgroup’s energy consumption and emphasise the value of conserving resources.

Additionally, the playgroup has a poly tunnel where children engage in planting and gardening. They learn about various plants, how to care for them, and the benefits of growing their own food. This hands-on experience not only enhances their understanding of nature but also promotes healthy eating habits.

Through these initiatives, Ardstraw Community Playgroup is nurturing environmentally conscious young children equipped with the knowledge and habits to positively impact their world now and in the future.
